Artist Ashok Kumar's Vibrant Touch: A Window to the Soul

"Vibrant Touch" by Indian Artist Ashok Kumar: An Exploration of Inner Landscapes- Dr. Shalini Yadav

"Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known." -Oscar Wilde

Wilde has tried to highlight the inherent individuality of art, reflecting the artist's distinct voice and vision. This individualistic expression of an artist is what makes art so powerful, enabling one artist to share their innermost thoughts and emotions with the world.

This notion of individualistic expression resonates deeply in the realm of art, which is a rich and multifaceted phenomenon extending far beyond mere aesthetics. Encompassing emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural dimensions, art manifests human creativity and innovation, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. By providing a platform for self-expression, art allows artists worldwide to convey their unique perspectives and experiences. Many artists, both novice and veteran, aspire to showcase their work globally, seeking recognition and connection with diverse audiences. In this context, the increasing global acclaim for Indian art fills all Indian artists with pride, showcasing the country’s vibrant cultural heritage. Further enriching this narrative, I would like to highlight that in the last two months, renowned Indian artist Ashok Kumar showcased his artistic talent through beautiful paintings at various art centers in South Korea. His remarkable paintings explore themes related to human experience, spirituality, and the unconscious. Each artwork, crafted in acrylic on canvas, marks a significant milestone, as Ashok Kumar is the first Indian artist to hold such exhibitions in South Korea.

Now, Mr. Kumar is going to organize a solo exhibition of more than 30 paintings and drawings entitled "Vibrant Touch" at the Convention Foyer of Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from 23rd to 27th September 2025. The exhibition theme is a profound exploration of the inner self and the nuances of human emotions. Acknowledging Kumar's exceptional talent, the Center granted him the autonomy to select both the style and the number of works presented. Each painting narrates a psychological journey, inviting viewers to confront their inner landscapes. The exhibition is thoughtfully curated, as the team collaborated closely with Kumar to select a theme that embodies the intricate interplay of psychology, spirituality, and human aesthetics. The artworks reflect Kumar’s artistic capabilities, delving into the essence of the human soul and inviting the audience into a space of introspection. Kumar's journey to this exhibition has been a combination of challenges and rewards. In an exclusive interview, he shared insights into securing this opportunity: “It has taken years of dedication, participation in international art fairs, and continual evolution of my style,” he explained. “I connect deeply with audiences, and I believe it was this connection that caught the attention of the center.” His commitment to exploring the depths of human emotions has resonated with various galleries, culminating in this significant showcase.

Expressing his feelings about this monumental exhibition, Kumar conveyed both excitement and gratitude: “It’s overwhelming yet exhilarating. I am thrilled to share my work with an audience that appreciates the depth and complexity of art.” He emphasized the importance of this event, not just for his career, but for Indian art on a national stage via Delhi. “I have always believed in the power of art to connect cultures and convey universal messages with a humanistic approach,” he stated.

At the heart of Kumar's art is a human-centric perspective. Every composition, color, and symbol reflects the inner landscape of humanity. This approach is rare in the small art world and leads to timeless resonance in Kumar’s work. In contrast to cold concept art, which can stifle emotions, his creations emanate warmth and invite full immersion.  “I try to highlight the connection between spirituality and psychology in my work,” Kumar articulated. His paintings showcase recurring motifs, such as female figures symbolizing Carl Jung's "Anima," plant life representing vitality and healing, and celestial forms like crescent moons that suggest the cyclical nature of existence. Viewers can engage with these works on a non-verbal level. The harmony of ethereal colors evokes memories or 'trans' experiences, aligning perfectly with the exhibition's title—a mental axis reflecting the entirety of Kumar's artistry. His works prompt an encounter with one’s inner self, an essential power of art that might be either uncomfortable or comforting.

Ashok Kumar's exhibition is not merely a viewing experience; it invites the audience into a deep emotional and intellectual engagement with human truth and spiritual reasoning—a rarity in today's contemporary art landscape. This aesthetic dialogue transcends cultural boundaries, facilitating a meditative conversation that addresses the disconnection often felt in modern society.

I would like to share a glimpse of Ashok Kumar's artistic journey, which began at the College of Art in Patna, India, where he graduated with distinction in 1987. His pursuit of artistic mastery led him to France, where he received a scholarship for studies at "L’Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts de Marseille." He was later awarded a senior fellowship in painting from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, solidifying his position within the international art sphere.  Kumar’s work is a vibrant blend of symbolism and narratives that capture both the human experience and our intrinsic connection to nature. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has exhibited his art in numerous prestigious venues globally, resonating deeply with audiences in countries like South Korea, France, Peru, China, and Chile. Kumar’s creations have won acclaim not just locally but also on the international art scene. His artwork has been showcased in various international exhibitions and art fairs, leaving an indelible mark on art enthusiasts worldwide. Notably, his work was featured on the esteemed Artsy Page by ACS Gallery in Chicago a few years back.

Kumar’s unique ability to traverse the cultural split between the East and the West while exploring universal themes of human emotion has fostered invaluable dialogue within the art community. His artworks are included in various museum collections across Europe and Asia, as well as in private collections in India. Discussing his artistic vision, Kumar remarked, “My creation explores new visions through the imagination of human beings, connecting with our cultural diversity. I aim to create a sense of ecstasy and peace through my art, exploring the interplay between humanity and nature.” This resonates deeply with audiences, weaving an emotional tapestry that transcends language. When asked about his message to emerging generations of artists, Kumar underscored the significance of authenticity and self-reflection: “Create from your truth. There is immense power in vulnerability and honesty in art. Don't shy away from exploring your inner self,” he advised. This testament echoes throughout his narratives, often inviting viewers on an introspective journey. Ashok Kumar's exhibition at India Habitat Centre promises to be not only a visual delight but also an immersive experience that stretches the boundaries of contemporary art. As attendees step into his enchanted world, they will have the opportunity to engage with their subconscious, transforming this exhibition into a profound encounter with the essence of human reality.

Kumar's exhibition exemplifies his unique sculptural language, melding traditional Indian mythological symbolism with Western expressionist dialogues. The thematic exploration of inner fascination serves not just as a title but as a mental axis encompassing his entire body of work, inviting viewers to engage with human truth and spiritual understanding. His recurring motifs move beyond simple portraiture, interpreted as 'inner self-portraits' and 'psychological portraits.' This work transcends specific time and place, acting as a reflective surface for the unconscious and encapsulating the human experience.  Aesthetically, Ashok Kumar's passion is expressed vibrantly through both abstraction and expressionism, firmly rooting itself in his dual identity of Indian spirituality and the experimental ethos of European art. While influenced by artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, Kumar’s distinct flatness, rhythm, and contemplation of facial expressions forge his unique articulative style. He pushes the genre's boundaries, blending conversation with meditation and psychological depth with innermost spirituality.

In recognition of his remarkable contributions to the global artistic landscape, Kumar's story is a source of inspiration for many. It exemplifies the power of art as a universal language that transcends borders, inviting all to explore the depths of their own inner ecstasy. For those interested in the arts, I am excited to announce that they can visit Ashok Kumar's personal exhibition, titled “Vibrant Touch,” at the Convention Foyer of Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from 23rd to 27th September 2025. I wish him the best as he continues to achieve new heights!

Ashok Kumar from India Attends Seven Biennales and Numerous Art Festivals around the World including: Beijing, Langkawi, George Town, Dallas TX USA, Busan, Reunion, Taiwan, India, Mexico, Iran, Turkey, and Bangkok, Thailand”

Edited by Elizabeth Esguerra Castillo

Magazine Published By Glitterati Quillwithspark, issue-3, Jaipur, India

Ashok Kumar is a Globally-renowned Visual Artist working as a Freelancer in New Delhi, India. He was born on 1st Feb 1965 in Bihar, India. His family atmosphere was one of the basic great art influencers and was artistically and highly inspired by his father. That was the early foundation of his art career. He was admitted to the College of Art, Patna, Patna University, and graduated even though he encountered a financially challenging social situation and accomplished his studies as a bright and brilliant student at the College of Art in the year 1987.

After completing his graduation, he motivated himself for a better future. In 1990, he received a Scholarship for higher study in fine art at L’Ecole Superieure des Beaux-arts de Marseille, France was the new hope, dream, and great challenge again to grasp the new dimension of life. He has accomplished this again through his hard work and blessings from his well-wishers. When he started his education in art, a few very talented art teachers were his art influencers. He has learned a lot. Consequently, he came closer to the world of contemporary art and artists. Most of the great masters of Western art inspired him a lot when he encounters their original artwork during his study and became his favourite influencer. The great artists from Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, and Cubism, like Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Renoir, Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, Eduard Munich, Balthus, Modigliani, Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall, George Braque, Marcel Duchamp, and Frida Kahlo are his favorite influencers of whom the works are so relevant, realistic, imaginative, and very close to daily life events. Mostly he has put the colours on canvas so aesthetically and harmoniously. He received an award for senior fellowship in painting for 2015-16 from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India 2017.

It was amazing to exhibit his work on ARTSY PAGE by ACS Gallery, Chicago, USA, 2017.

As he quotes – “My creation explores a new vision through the imagination of the human being as an origin that belongs to our cultural diversity with many symbols and signs. What we indulge in or experience in the surrounding nature with positive vibes and thoughts are usually creating ecstasy in our minds. I depict the semi-figurative human form with the relevant combination of nature and other organisms in my creation to explain and explore high consciousness and spirituality. We may see that many of our conflicts and problems in life are the result of being out of alignment with nature. We must respect the planetary ecosystem on which our survival as a human being depends. Alignment with nature brings us into peace and harmony with ourselves and the world around us. Once we accept the fact that we are part of nature, we can see that for us to function optimally on this planet, we must understand its laws and act by the cosmos. We can find beauty everywhere by loving nature truly.
I would like to elaborate a little about my two paintings displayed in an international art exhibition SAVE THE PLANET-Taiwan; the first one is “The Life under the Sun” and the second one is “We and our planet”. Both paintings have been completed with acrylic colors on canvas. Colors are relevant and applied aesthetically all over the canvas with their other form of subject which is related to our nature and cosmic elements.

The sun is extremely vital for our life even without the sun we cannot imagine our life and coexistence on this planet. The existence of this planet depends on solar energy and heat. The season and climates only depend on sunlight. There is the sun in the center and other all creatures, plants, and human beings are under the sun which I have depicted well on the canvas with harmonious acrylic colors. My painting has simply expressed the life and importance of the Sun.

The earth, our planet is only the place where life exists. We live on this planet with the alignment of the other creature and nature. We need all the necessary vibes of nature to live on this wonderful planet. Life is impossible without a harmonious relationship with the other creature and nature. The artist creates attraction in the paintings by spreading the colors, the way of applying, creating the texture. The exercises done by the stroke of color, lines and brushes create different dimensions in the painting. In Ashok's paintings, soft colors mixed with basic colors like Golden, Silver, Red, Blue, Burnt sienna direct and white colors create beauty in the paintings. His paintings show peace, calmness.
